Scouts on the Air

The Top of the Panhandle Amateur Radio club (TOPARC) of Perryton, TX has received a grant of $7,500 from the Amateur Radio Relay League Foundation (ARRLF). The Scouts on the Air! project will involve Scouts from several troops in the northern Texas Panhandle working with volunteer members of TOPARC.

The grant will be spent on materials for helping Scouts achieve their amateur radio license, provide radios for them to use for a year, and if they achieve a General Class license, keep for their own ham shack. The funds will also provide for kits for antennas, electronic accessories, a device to adapt the hand-held radio for digital communication, travel to parks to participate in projects like Parks on the Air and contests that involve amateur radio enthusiasts, young and old, around the world, and more.  The kits will help develop construction skills and conceptual understanding of radio communication.

The Scouts will also receive additional training, with their parents’ permission, in emergency response and acquire special knowledge and skills to use as part of a team in an emergency situation.

The benefit to the Scouts who are selected for the project include practical knowledge of physics, electronics, and communication. Finishing the program will strengthen their applications to universities and make them stand out from other applicants, open the doors to opportunities in employment or the military, perhaps spark interest in a profession, and give them life-long skills that can be used anywhere in the world. An amateur radio license demonstrates that a person has intelligence, perseverance, unusual knowledge, and an interest in serving the public.

Planning sessions begin in January, and the project will continue into 2024.
